Reviews For This Wine

($70) Saturated ruby. Primary crushed raspberry and currant fruit aromas complicated by minerals, milk chocolate, mushroom and tobacco. Then highly concentrated and a bit muscular in the mid-palate, with a slightly porty dried fruit quality. Offers compelling sweetness in the mouth, but finishes with substantial, somewhat drying tannins. This wine was outclassed by the more vibrant, stylish Clos Martinet tasted alongside it, but, based on other reports I've seen on this wine, it's possible that my sample of Mogador was less than perfect. (It must be noted that I have seen some references to bottle variation on this wine. ) (Europvin/Christopher Cannan Selections; The Boutique Wine Collection, Philadelphia, PA)

Very deep crimson, still with lots of purple. very marked llicorella character on the nose - extremely minerally. Lovely topnote of life with marked but certanly not excessive acidity to lift all this weight of fruit. Less forward than the other wine but extremely lively and vivacious. For the long term.

Simply sensational, this inky/purple-colored 2001 boasts gorgeous blueberry and raspberry liqueur characteristics intertwined with crushed stone, lilac, and subtle background espresso/toasty new oak notes. Powerful, concentrated, and multilayered, with tremendous purity and intensity, this prodigious effort is one of the candidates for wine of the vintage in Priorat.

Suave, sophisticated, rich and concentrated, but remains balanced and polished, with bright blueberry and blackberry flavors supported by toasty, vanilla-scented oak. A modern wine with great structure and harmony. 1,800 cases made.

About This Producer

Rene Barbier of Clos Mogador has earned a place at the top of this region's producer list. He extracts juice of great structure and power from his fruit, all with the help of an olive press, which ensures even higher concentration from the already highly concentrated Priorat varietals. Minimal yields of 80-year old Carinena, as well as younger Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha, and Syrah are are hand-harvested from the schist soils in the village of Gratallops. Clos Mogador produces limited quantities of three wines: Clos Mogador (35% Garnacha, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, and 10% Carinena); Clos Manyetes (70% Carinena, 20% Garnacha, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Syrah); and Clos Nelin Joven (50% Garnacha Blanca, 30% Viognier, and 20% Pinot Noir).
