($50-$72) Deep ruby-red. Captivating aromas of currant, mocha, minerals, smoked meat and tobacco. Sweet on entry, then suave and cedary in the middle, with a lightly herbal character adding complexity. Very harmonious wine. Last year I found this denser than the 2002, but today I find the 2002 more impressive in the context of its vintage. Von Neipperg ages this wine in all new barrels, with Taransaud and Darnajou his two most important sources, but Canon La Gaffeliere rarely comes across as particularly smoky-oaky as the barrels get a slow, medium toast using steam.

Made in a structured, tannic, restrained style (representative of the vintage's overall personality), this medium to full-bodied 2001 exhibits scents of espresso roast, cedar, chocolate, black currants, and cherries. With sweet but noticeable tannin, exceptional multilayered flavors, and excellent texture, elegance as well as purity, it will be at its finest between 2005-2013.

Pretty berry and spice aromas, with hints of new wood. Turns to animal and meat character but blows off with lots of air. Decadent juice. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Lovely stuff. Slightly reductive now, but this should come out lovely. 4,275 cases made.

This year's cepage is 45% Franc (an increased percentage for this Ch?teau and due to 2001?s vintage character) 5% Cabernet and 50% Merlot. Smells primarily of violets and oak now with intense sweet fruit on the palate. Very nice controlled wine that will gain complexity as it ages. Impressive effort for this rather lackluster vintage. Re 2003 vintage Stephan von Neipperg, the Ch?teau 's owner, remarked that it was "a vintage for lazy people" because quality was superlative and required little effort to obtain. During the heat of 2003 however, vineyards on terrain that was porous, such as sand, and did not hold water long suffered according to von Neipperg.
