Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 91

($100) Bright red-ruby. Flamboyant nose combines cassis, black pepper and smoky French oak. Sweet on the palate but with lovely cut, thanks to firm acidity. flavors similar to the aromas. Finishes with building tannins and strong oakiness.

I think something is wrong with this wine. Not corked but some oxidation.

Has really come into its own. Decant for 30-60 minutes. Medium bodied, food friendly, lengthy finish. Drink now or the next year or two.

I had this with a grilled NY Strip steak on 5/11/09. It had a fabulous bouquet of cassis, blackberry, pencil shaving, french roasted coffee, burnt toast and spice aromas. The palate followed with blackberry, black currant, burnt toast, espresso and spice flavors. It was very full bodied with round, well integrated tannins. It had a long and very dusty, dry finish. It was very good.

About This Producer

Of this esteemed winery, importer Eric Solomon writes: "Artadi is about purity of extracted fruit with almost Burgundian textures. In fact, critics have often compared these wines to the top wines of Chambolle-Musigny and other top appellations of Burgundy. They are some of the most extraordinary examples of Tempranillo in the world."

Winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle turned this former small cooperative into a Tempranillo powerhouse on the solid foundation of his elegant wines. Since the mid-1990s, when de la Calle took control of the property, it has grown to include 75 ha of vineyards in the high altitude, chalky soils of Rioja. French oak complements the mineral-laden fruit in the top cuvees. See all Spain producers
