Good medium ruby. Wild nose dominated by roast coffee and meat. Then rich and spicy in the mouth, with dark fruit flavors complicated by a meaty quality. The brettanomyces element here is not especially aggressive yet robs the wine of some of its primary fruit and verve. Still, this finishes supple, sweet and persistent.

The dark ruby/purple-colored, sweet, dense, beautifully fruited 2000 Pinot Noir Russian River (1,400 cases) is more charming and consumer-friendly than most of this estate's Pinots. Although not long-lived, for drinking over the next 4-5 years, it is top-flight.

Spicy and minty, with hints of barnyard and leather woven in with tea and plum; a touch of beefy stemminess on the finish suggests short-term cellaring. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 1,389 cases made.

Elegant as a Chopin Nocturne, soft spoken yet poignant. Fruit is still there, but a fading beauty. Drink ASAP!
