International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 108

($319-$395) Full medium ruby. Exotic aromas of cassis, roast coffee and sweet oak. Sweet, thick and oaky, with superb breadth of flavor; at once chewy and smooth. An impressively rich, ripe, oaky Mouton with palate-staining length and strong finishing oakiness. But less noble and scented than the young 2002, which may be every bit as dense.

Dark, glowing ruby. Notably toasty nose - odd for a first growth! Easy to like for its sweetness and toastiness. This does not seem to have first growth subtlety - though it does have that snazzy heavy bottle with the gold sheep engraved on it...

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 189

Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on a Bordeaux bottle, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild literally produced a work of art in the gold-engraved bottle of 2000 Mouton Rothschild. Of course, one can't drink the glass, but this is a top-flight Mouton Rothschild, eclipsed only by the 2006 and 2009. A rich, tannic, earthy style, with loads of creme de cassis and floral notes, the final blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot is a full-bodied wine with plenty of coffee, earth, chocolatey notes, and still plenty of tannin to resolve. I gave it an anticipated maturity range of 2015-2050 back in 2003, and that looks on target.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

Rich, with loads of tobacco, berry, currant and coffee. Full-bodied and round, with velvety tannins and a long, vanilla aftertaste. If this had a tiny bit more concentration in the center palate, it would be a few points more. Still, it's an outstanding wine. A generous and opulent Mouton. 21,215 cases made.

On first glance, the laser etched 24 carat gold inlaid bottle looks similar to a Lyeth bottle from California. On closer inspection, the wine?s packaging is substantially more impressive. I don'tforesee too many of these bottles being recycled in the future. Opaque black cherry red with thick slow moving moderately pigmented legs. A sexy and smoky nose of slight game and deep intensely concentrated dark fruits. Cascading tannins frame elegant but apparently bottomless fruit. The wine finishes long with the distinct flavor of Snickers bars. The epitome of power coupled with elegance and breeding. Drink 2020 to 20"what do I care I will be dead".
