Red-ruby. Aromas of currant, coffee and menthol. Offers an intriguing mineral quality in the mouth but lacks generosity and depth, not to mention persistence. With modest mid-palate material, the tannins come across as a bit dry.

Very good bottle of wine. Almost a tease -- it gives you a great idea of what you would get if you could afford to buy Harlan's first wine -- but doesn't quite get you there.

Dinner at home with Cophams and friends. Boatloads of fruit. Still a baby and I'll wait a bit before opening my last bottle. Lots of coffee and chocolate notes.

The Maiden is Harlan Estate?s second wine. It is a true second wine because all barrels from a vintage are raised in exactly the same manner and then, after they have developed, are tasted with the best barrels going to the Estate and the balance becoming the Maiden. Because Harlan co-ferments its wine, it is virtually impossible to know the exact cepage of the Maiden but it is safe to say that it consists primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2000 is already enjoyable to drink and I would opt to consume this wine earlier in its lifecycle then other Maidens. Moderate to dark red colored wine with an already expansive nose of Taransaud oak, mint, vanilla, cr?me brul?e, milk, and dark fruits. Deft fruit coupled with attractive oak shadings. Significant tannins clamp down on the finish and snuff out the wine prematurely. Acidity is quite good. A lighter styled Maiden but still quite enjoyable.
