($85; 14.3% alcohol; 84% cabernet sauvignon, 12% merlot and 2% each cabernet franc and petit verdot) Good medium ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines redcurrant, black raspberry, graphite and mint. Sweet and vinous, with a supple middle and lovely clarity of flavor. Not a particularly large wine but shapely and consistent. Notes of leather and tobacco. Finishes with ripe, fine tannins.

There are 440 cases of the 2000 Proprietary Red Wine (a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot) from a vineyard close to such titans as Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle. Aged in French oak, it is an elegant, dense, medium to full-bodied, impressively pure offering revealing notes of cedar wood, black currants, and earth. However, the price is very intimidating.

This wine did not impress me from barrel (the 2001 is another story) and the wine from bottle does nothing to dispel my initial impressions. Consisting of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 2% each of Franc and Petit Verdot, this wine is made by Andy Smith with the talented Pam Starr consulting. This wine is no different than countless other (cheaper) Cabernets from California and other parts of the New World. Darkly hued with aromas of anise and pickle barrel, on the palate the wine is excessively acidic and lacks sufficient fruit concentration to carry the acids and tannin.
