International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 106

($81) Saturated medium-deep ruby. Exotic aromas of black fruit liqueur, road tar, smoked meat and hot stones; this reminded me of a great ripe-year Hermitage. Hugely rich and dense, with compelling sweetness and pliancy but also sound framing acidity. Extremely youthful and very long on the aftertaste. Finishes with suave but strong tannins and excellent grip and thrust. Like the best examples of the vintage, this won't injure your palate if you broach a bottle today, but it's structured for extended aging. (Kobrand, Inc., New York, NY)

Jancis Robinson Author: Jancis Robinson

Exceptionally dark crimson. Luscious prunes in Armagnac on the nose. Well integrated and very hedonistic. Super luscious but with a real structure to it. Dry liquorice finish. Very dry finish indeed actually but pretty promising for the future.

Wine Advocate Author: Neal Martin Issue: 205

The 2000 Fonseca continues to exude finesse and focus on the nose, with pure blackberry, juniper berries, licorice and a touch of sloes, perhaps as Adrian Bridge remarked, just beginning to close after ten years in bottle. The palate is underpinned by very fine tannins, a sensual, svelte texture with wonderful acidity. The harmony and symmetry is alluring, the finish precise and demonstrating the persistency to suggest a long future ahead. Drink 2020-2060.

Fabulous nose of crushed raspberries, blackberries and licorice. Full-bodied and velvety, with superclean fruit and a long finish. Beauty. Very harmonious for Fonseca. 12,500 cases made.

For The Love of Port Author: Roy Hersh Issue: Issue 34

Inky and opaque. Glad I noticed the yellow jacket (bee) in my glass before taking a sip. Wow, this is a stupendous young Port and it took me a moment for it to sink in which vintage this was. A massive fruited youngster that is already confident and so smooth. There’s an elegance to this Port and I wish I could see what this will be like in another forty years. It delivers a great finish and is just layered with flavor and is already a superb drink.

Daniel B Trust Rating: 99 Tasted On: 06/14/2003 Drink Dates: 2010-2025

Dark red purple colored wine with thin slow moving moderately pigmented legs. Surprisingly accessible nose of green apple, maple syrup, dark fruits, and heat. Smooth and suave in the mouth with good fruit, apparently light tannins, and only average sweetness. The wine finishes sooner than I would expect. Quite a fine early drinking rather approachable port. Drink 2010 to 2025. 2000 seems more and more to me to be only an above average year that is benefiting from the 2000 designation.
