International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 108

($85) Full ruby-red. Wild, expressive aromas of black raspberry, cedar, lead pencil, mocha, coffee and animal fur. Fat, silky and lush yet dry; a thick, round Figeac with impressive volume. Even the merlot in 2000 showed solid structure. Like the 2001, this shows an intriguing burnt note. Finishes with big but suave tannins and lingering notes of cherry, chocolate and black olive. The richest of these three vintages by a wide margin. (A second bottle of the 2000 showed more oak spice, less volume and a distinctly peppery aspect, however.)

Very rich and slightly hollow. Very lively. A 1964 in the making? More refreshing than the 2005. Very juicy, succulent and exciting. Long. Much racier than the 2005.

Figeac has become a more consistent wine over the last few years. A profound effort, the surprisingly full-bodied 2000 Figeac has an opaque purple color accompanied by a terrific bouquet of camphor, graphite, black currants, licorice, and smoked herbs. With well-balanced, powerful tannin, concentration, and pinpoint precision, finesse, and purity, this expressive as well as textured effort will drink well between 2004-2018. When Figeac hits on all cylinders, one can understand why some tasters believe it is as complex as Cheval Blanc. This is undeniably the estate's finest effort since 1996.

Interesting, decadent character. Some might call it old-fashioned. Intense aromas of dried herbs and chocolate. Cooked plum. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Slightly herbal character. Not quite as good as from barrel.

Oh yeah, this stuff is excellent. Given to me from a friend, it showed excellent fruit and great creme de cassis intertwined with tannins that pop. Definitely has another 10-15 years in it. Finish is long and tasty. An engaging wine.

Great color and potentially an excellant 2000 Bordeaux but the wine needs time. Save waht you have for five years and then taste again!

Retail purchase about 1.5 years ago. Decanted 45 minutes. Dark blue, slightly watery rim. Pepper and mint, forest and earth. Young and taut. Brambly and austere. Less fruit, more concentration. Quite distinct in the line-up of other Cabernet-based wines (granted this is 35% Cab Sauv, 35% Cab Franc 30% Merlot). The over-riding pepper nose and taste is a surprise. Very long, lingers and the pepper dissipates. Second day is a little mellower, but still concentrated. I prefer the magnificent 2001 to this bottle at this point. Let's see again in a few years.
