($65) Red-ruby. Roasted aromas of black fruits, leather, maple syrup and mocha. Initially a bit tight on the palate, but showed a lush, seamless texture as it opened in the glass, without losing its definition. Not quite as dense as the 2001 but very full in the mouth, with a higher-pH impression. Finishes very long, with the ripe tannins coating the front teeth.

The opaque ruby/purple-colored 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a profoundly sweet perfume of melted licorice, blackberries, and black cherries backed up by loads of glycerin, full body, and moderately high but sweet, well-integrated tannin. There is a seamlessness to the 2000 that will make it accessible early in life, and thus atypical for Beaucastel. The 1985 behaved in this manner when young, but the 2000 possesses even more stuffing. Like its 2001 sibling, it is a classic blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Counoise, and the balance other permitted varietals.

Clean and fresh, bursting with fruit and spices. Full-bodied, it delivers some game, truffle, vanilla notes. It's distinctive and ought to reveal wonderful i terroir n with age, but for now it hasn't come together. Needs time. 16,665 cases made.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation Much like most 2000?s, this wine is extravagantly perfumed, forward and out-right precocious from the starting gates. Aromas whack you over the head w/ plum sauce, black currant, spice box, dried mushroom and gravel leading the way. A rich, multi-layered body, with a core of rich, gorgeous fruit gushes over the palate with such ease, making this wine nearly impossible not to love

Drank with braised lamb shanks at Lavender Hill. Low acidity, medium fruit. Perhaps not enough structure foe Lamb but still very nice. WIll improve with 1 or 2 years.

About This Producer

Chateau Beaucastel, run by the Perrin brothers, is regarded as one of the best estates of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. At 131 hectares of vineyards, it is also one of the largest estates in the region. It is atypical of the appellation in its production techniques. It is one of three estates to produce and vinify all 13 grapes permitted under the regulations of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Also, unlike most estates, Beaucastel prefers to use as much Mourvedre in its blend as Grenache. As one of the first estates to practices organic viticulture, Chateau Beaucastel is often criticized for the influence of Brettanomyces, yeast that may contribute animalistic flavors to the wine. They are also controversial for their vinification practice of rapidly heating the incoming must in order to kill bacteria and extract color and flavor from the skins. After maturation in oak casks, the wine is bottled with light fining and no filtration. The house produces several cuvees, the grand vin known as Chateau Beaucastel. Their other wines include Hommage a Jean Perrin, Chateau Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes. Good values can be had by their Cotes du Rhone, Coudoulet de Beaucastel and their negociant line under the name Vieille Ferme.
