($100; a single-vineyard wine from vines planted in 1945 on limestone-rich soil) Deep ruby-red. Bright, minerally aromas of raspberry, violet and mocha. Dense, fat and silky but also succulent, with impressive volume leavened by the wine's mineral spine. Very sexy, fresh wine of considerable class. Finishes very long and suave, with less overt oakiness. (This was aged in a combination of demi-muids and 300-liter barrels.) (European Cellars, Charlotte, NC)

Very, very deep colour. Very sweet and animal and confident on the nose. Very well-balanced and broad. Opulent. Spicy, rich but not superficial. Very, very special. Dances and sings. Long.

El Pison is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. The soil is pure limestone, yields are a lowly 18-22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged for 18-24 months in French oak. The rich, profound 2000 El Pison boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as full body, tremendous precision, and layers of sweet strawberry, cherry, raspberry, and black currant fruit intermixed with mineral, subtle wood, and flower notes. Drink it now and over the next 15 years.
