($80-$90) Full red-ruby. Roasted, smoky aromas of blackberry, blueberry and licorice. Plush, dense and large-scaled; expands impressively in the mouth. Chocolatey-ripe but kept fresh by nicely integrated acidity. Offers lovely sweetness without going over the top. Finishes with big, dusty, horizontal tannins and lovely aromatic persistence. Offers extraordinary texture and depth of flavor for a wine with just 12.8% alcohol.

Tannins starting to soften but this is still a vigorous wine that most traditional claret lovers would want to age a bit longer.

Wine Advocate | 95+

Originally rated 96, this wine confirmed its early rating, although again, the backwardness and still very obvious tannins suggest another 7- to 8-year wait. Dense ruby/purple, with a bouquet of blueberry, crushed rock, and some floral notes, the wine is medium to full-bodied , rich, powerful, but again very tannic and still strikingly youthful. For a wine that is already 10 years of age, it remains infantile. This blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is indeed a special wine and should hit its prime in about 2020 and last at least 30 years afterward.

Aromas of mint, berry and licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate that is thick and rich yet refined and reserved. This is dense and well-structured, with loads of vanilla, berry and lightly roasted fruit. Powerful but still holding back. Compacted and dense.--Non-blind Chateau Montrose vertical. 15,000 cases made.

A special 2000 in my opinion and getting better. Full of great depth of fruit with light acidity, coming around nicely.

this is a fabulous bordeaux. ready to drink but decant at least 30 minutes for it to start to open and it will improve for an hour. an almost perfect balance of tannins and fruit with a great nose and huge finish. enjoy now or hold 10 years or more.

Opening up nicely now, still young, but fairly amazaing. Hard to imagine waiting five more years. Blueberry, crushed rock, floral, casis, soft mouthfeel, balanced. A trimuph. Bordeaux at its best. Open 4 hours, decanted. You will be truly amazed. Save some for the chocolate desert.

About This Producer

Located in the heart of the Saint-Estephe appellation, Second Growth classified Chateau Montrose has been in the hands of the Charmoule family for over 100 years. The family has continued to follow age-old winemaking traditions of the Medoc with spectacular results. The vineyards also benefit from the mild microclimate created by the nearby Gironde estuary, which helps temper the climate, ensuring the grapes ripen under ideal conditions. Considered one of the top Saint-Estephe producers, Chateau Montrose is prized for its classic Claret style wines, big fruit and full structure. The wines are also known for their incredibly tannic nature, allowing them to stand up to years of aging. Chateau Montrose makes a second wine called La Dame de Montrose.
