Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 93

($140; just 450 cases produced) Good saturated ruby-red. Lively aromas of black raspberry, violet and minerals, lifted by a peppery vinosity. Very rich, smooth and suave, with flavors of black fruits, roast coffee and dark chocolate. Has a youthfully medicinal quality but a wonderfully seamless texture for the year. Finishes with very fine tannins.

The 2000 Maya (a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Cabernet Franc) is a medium-weight, elegant effort displaying spice box, incense, loamy soil, dried herb, creme de cassis, and smoky oak characteristics. Medium-bodied, lovely, and forward, it will drink well for 8-12 years.

Lots of chocolate, berry and wood on the nose. Full-bodied, chewy and rich, with lots of ripe fruit and vanilla and espresso on the finish. Long and rich.

A seamless, layered wine, the 2000 Maya is all about texture. Silky and polished to the core, the 2000 is open and totally seductive today. All of the Maya signatures are in place in wine that emphasizes finesse over sheer size.

Green pepper, coffee, and boysenberry integrated nicely into the nose. The palate is a bit syrupy, but well structured. Long, somewhat viscous finish.

Piercing sweet candied cherry fruit with laser like intensity. The wine?s aromas are rather simple but what is delivered is entrancing indeed. Good fruit on the palate with chocolate and oak nuances dissipates quickly with very firm tannin squelching the finish. An immediately appealing 2000 that may never completely shed its tannic cloak. 55% Cabernet and 45% Franc.

About This Producer

From vineyards set 400 feet above the floor of Napa Valley, two critically-acclaimed powerhouse wines are crafted. Both the Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes just a touch of estate Cabernet Franc) and the Maya (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc) showcase Oakville fruit in its most concentrated intensity. Production is limited to micro-quantities, making these wines sought-after prizes for collectors and wine enthusiasts alike.

Gustav and Naoko Dalla Valle bought their family estate in 1982, realizing their vision of producing world-class wine. The first vintages were 1986 for the Cabernet and 1988 for the Maya, which went on to earn a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker for the 1992 vintage. Naoko Dalla Valle has maintained sole responsibility for the vineyards and winery since her husband's death in 1995. French enologist Michel Rolland consults bi-annually on winemaking and blending decisions.
