International Wine Cellar | 90

($150) Good red-ruby color. Aromas of wild black raspberry, chocolate, graphite and sexy, smoky oak. Tightly wound and perhaps less dense than the '99, but riper than the 2000 Melbury. Flavors of currant, minerals and truffle. Finishes with big, youthfully aggressive tannins and very good length.

The dense ruby/purple-colored 2000 Vecina offers up aromas of loamy earth, black fruits, chocolate, and toasty wood. I would not call it superficial, but it is no match for its younger sibling. Medium-bodied, with beautiful fruit, excellent purity, and a long, complex finish, it will drink well for 10-13 years.

Gobs of up-front mocha-scented oak lead to a core of plush currant and blackberry fruit. While there's no denying the strong presence of oak, it adds a wonderful dimension. 675 cases made.

Only ok. Not much fruit left on this one. Nose of lilacs with woody (cedar?) notes. Disjointed with strong alcohol on the finish. I think this wine lost more than it gained in the bottle. I didn't really like this much, although my wife did.

The wine hails from a vineyard that is adjacent to the Harlan Estate vineyard. Darkly colored with thin deeply pigmented legs. Bright spicy vanilla, new wood, and plum aromatics with some tomato overtones. Lots of everything in the mouth ? fruit, wood, and mouthwatering acidity. A smooth reasonably plush early drinking Cabernet.

About This Producer

In his ongoing quest to produce world class wine in the tradition of 1st Growth Bordeaux, Bill Harlan - of Harlan Estate fame - started Bond to create single vineyard wines from sources meeting his high growing standards. Winemaker Robert Levy produces five vineyard designate wines: Melbury, St. Eden, Vecina, Pluribus and Quella, as well as a blend called The Matriarch. Levy's goal is for each wine to take on the unique expression of its vineyard site and Bill Harlan's ultimate plan is to produce wines from a total of 6 unique vineyards. The wines are known for their lush, deeply concentrated flavors, and their elegance and finesse, which Bill and Robert feel define them as the "Grand Crus" of Napa. Fewer than 1,500 cases of the Matriarch, and between 400 and 700 cases of the vineyard designates are produced annually.
