($87; 15.7% alcohol; 90% grenache and 10% syrah) Saturated ruby-red. Exotic aromas of liqueur-like red fruits, spice cake, chocolate, gunflint, bonfire, walnut and scotch. Sweet, thick and creamy, with rather wild, deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry, flint and minerals. Almost too much, yet this lush, superripe wine somehow avoids coming off as heavy. This has wonderful fruit and length, finishing with thoroughly ripe, sweet tannins. In style, this is very much like a top Chateauneuf du Pape from a very ripe year.

Deep burnished red with just a slight lightening at the edges. Powerful yet elegant and intense scents of burnt toast, tar, airy plum, spicy dark fruits, a bit of tomato, stone, minerals, and flint. The wine keeps morphing in the glass and you don'tknow what it might offer up the next time you inhale it. Finely integrated tannin. Excellent acidity and the flavors linger and linger in the mouth. As with the best of wines, there is an incredible presence to this wine ? strong yet ethereal simultaneously. Incognito is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah sourced from the Alban and Stolpman Vineyards. It was raised in 50% new oak for slightly over a year and a half before being put into glass without fining or filtration.

About This Producer

Manfred Krankl, an Austrian immigrant and Los Angeles restaurateur turned winemaker, is a reclusive and maniacally hard-working proprietor. His back-alley Ventura winery, dubbed the "garage d'or," has been described as "a junkyard (or the first or second level of hell)" and compared to a set from the movie "Mad Max" by Robert Parker. A true believer in radical viticulture, Krankl has worked with excessively low yields and maintains his winery and vineyards with meticulous attention to detail.

Since the debut "Queen of Spades" in 1994, original artwork and increasingly creative wordplay has adorned the label of each SQN wine. The wine itself has become a benchmark for Rhone varieties not just in California, but in the world. With 100-point scores in double digits, Robert Parker raves, "...the Grenache is the finest in the New World, the Syrah begs to be compared with the greatest of France, California, and Australia, and the white wine blends assembled by Manfred Krankl are as sumptuous and complex as the world's finest Chardonnays..." For all collectors, and particularly those that love Rhone-styled wines, SQN truly is something indispensable.
