($110; roughly two-thirds merlot and one-third cabernet sauvignon, with a touch of petit verdot) Bright, full ruby. Sweetly oaky aromas of cassis, violet, bitter chocolate and lead pencil. Sweet, suave and deep, with mouthfilling, deeply oaky dark berry and lead pencil flavors nicely framed by juicy acidity. Finishes with impressively fine tannins for the vintage, and strong fruit flavors of blackberry and currant. This is the "brother" of winemaker Bob Foley's eponymously labeled blend; at present, this is the more seductive wine, while Foley's shows a firmer tannic structure.

Offers up-front jazzy, spicy oak and fills in with ripe currant, spice and blackberry fruit, with hints of sage and cedar. Well-balanced, rich and concentrated, with firm yet supple tannins. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. 300 cases made.

Another great showing for this under-appreciated 2000. Liquid lead pencil, cassis, black fruits, and firm tannins make this a winner!

Deep ruby, with a touch of brick orange. Dried, somewhat spicy oak, pencil shavings, dark berry fruit, and menthol aromas. Tannins are still prominent, and a bit grainy. Balance good, with a medium long finish, turning a tad dry in the mouth.

About This Producer

Riding the crest of the Mayacamas Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,100 feet, Pride Mountain Vineyards' 200+ acre property is bisected by the Napa/Sonoma county line. The family owned winery has been making some of Spring Mountain's best wines since 1990. Winemaker Bob Foley employs the laborious technique of picking, vinifying, and barrel-aging each of 80 vineyard blocks separately, resulting in the most ideal ripeness levels and blend quality. This integration of vineyard practices and winemaking art is done purposefully. The goal is wines that are bold and fruitful, and that speak of their mountain lineage. Considered by Robert Parker to belong in "the top echelon of California's quality wineries," wines from Pride's gravelly mountaintop vineyards are consistently highly rated and are a staple component of any classic Napa collector's cellar.
