($22) Full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black fruits, chocolate, licorice and spicy oak. Sweet, dense and concentrated, with spicy flavors of red- and blackcurrant, tobacco and milk chocolate complicated by a meaty nuance. Expands nicely in the mouth, showing a silky texture. Finishes with big, tongue-coating tannins and very good length. Aged in all French barriques, 30% new and the rest previously used for Numanthia.

The personal project of importer/broker Jorge Ordonez, the 2000 Termes represents a budget-priced introduction to the Toro appellation. Made from 100% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo), it exhibits rich, concentrated, jammy black currant and blackberry fruit intermixed with notions of licorice, smoke, and earth. A big fruit bomb without a great deal of complexity, it will provide undeniably seductive, luscious drinking if consumed over the next 2-4 years. It was aged 20 months in French oak, a fact I would not have suspected.

Powerful and harmonious. This polished red has it all working--ripe fruit, lavish oak, firm structure and a promise to open and develop with age. Notes of plum, mineral, smoke and spices should open up and develop with time. 3,000 cases made.
