International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 109

($45; from 70-to-100-year-old vines) Saturated bright medium ruby. Cassis and mineral aromas along with pungent new French oak scents of espresso and bitter chocolate. Sweet, thick and superconcentrated, with an impressively chewy, layered texture; very sappy but still a bit youthfully clenched. Still hugely tannic, even a bit aggressive, on the end, but here the oak seems to be in harmony with the wine's powerful fruit, suggesting that all this wine needs is time in bottle.

Very upfront pleasing wine. Modern style Tempranillo. Fruit forward with extracted dark berry, plum and blueberry flavors. Full-bodied with finely grained, rounded tannins. Coats the palate and delivers a long, flavorful finish.

Decanted through a filter/aerator and sat for one hour+ in vessel then poured back into bottle using Aerator above filter and vacuum sealed. Even after several hours this wine was still a tannic beast! Dark violet color with slow legs dry, so huge, but flavors were so delicious - blueberries, blackberries just coat the mouth with espresso kicking in on the back palate. The tannins are still so gripping and to many this wine understandably showed as dry. Lots of power here, it almost reminded me of a dessert liqueur at times. Really well balanced, complex and not hot at all (14.5% is low these days) but just needs way more time, even 10 years later...or I needed to decant it longer! This wine will last another 10 years easily. Glad I tried this so I could see what I'm getting myself into with Numanthia.

Strong tannins, nose somewhat closed. Opened after a while. 2000 Aalto PS that followed was much more fruit forward.

From 70-100 year old Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) vines and aged for 19 months in French oak, this darkly colored Spanish new wave wine does not short change you on flavor. Lots of thick rich dark fruits, soy sauce, and light spice on the palate. Quite tannic with good acidity. I would opt for drinking this wine sooner to catch it with all its fruit ? the tannins are too heavy to ever properly ameliorate.
