More Vintages and Sizes of Kistler - Pinot Noir Cuvee Elizabeth Occidental Vineyard:
Author: Robert Parker
The 2000 Pinot Noir Occidental Vineyard Cuvee Elizabeth is profound. An opaque purple color is followed by gorgeous aromas of white flowers, minerals, black raspberries, cherries, and toast. It is slightly tight (from high tannin), and boasts layers of flavor, astonishing purity as well as fruit intensity, and a finish that lasts for nearly a minute. This majestic Pinot Noir is one of the most remarkable New World Pinots I have ever tasted. It can easily compete with the most profound French Burgundies. Bravo!

Deep opaque purple black color with a few moderately thick lightly pigmented legs. Initially, the wine was quite closed with little aromatics. After an hour in the decanter, aromas began to rush forth and become discernable from a few yards away. Thick sweet and Port like nuances of fruitcake, vanilla, candied plums, earth, leather, spearmint, and blackberry syrup. Reminiscent of a '95 Turley Zinfandel from Grist Vineyard (that wine had about 1% residual sugar left in it). Whoppingly rich on the palate with mouth staining flavors and superb length. Awesome concentration for a Pinot Noir. Whether the wine can last is problematic but right now it offers enjoyable drinking with a little airing. Flavors of intense dried plum, green pepper, maple syrup. Apparently light tannins (fruit is obscuring the actual magnitude of tannins present) with slightly low but acceptable acidity. Not as good as prior efforts of Cuv?e Elizabeth but quite fine nonetheless.
