Explosively scented, highly nuanced aromas of cool, restrained apple, pear and a panoply of ripe orchard fruits followed by concentrated, impressively dense, wonderfully complex, intensely sappy flavors revealing anise, limestone, citrus and a trace of pain grillé. While it's frankly too soon to say whether this will equal, or even surpass the 2000 Corton-Charlemagne, it's clearly in the same ballpark and every bit as focused, especially on the finish. A great effort.

($152; 14% natural alcohol, from superripe grapes that were all deep golden-yellow but not rotten, according to Coche; this wine received a light gravity filtration) Very ripe, smoky, leesy aromas of clove, marzipan and minerals. Thick and highly concentrated, with terrific fat and explosive ripeness. Perhaps not quite as dense or solid as the young '01 but wonderfully chewy and long.

The 2000 Meursault Perrieres reveals spices, cinnamon, and vanilla in its deep, concentrated character. Medium to full-bodied, it explodes on the palate with pears, apples, butter, gravel, stones, and minerals. It is velvety-textured, lush, exhibits massive depth and an intensely pure, powerful, and deep character. This is a Perrieres that will give Coche's 1996 a run for its money. Drink it over the next 12-14 years.

About This Producer

According to Robert Parker, "Jean-Francois Coche-Dury is one of the greatest winemakers on planet Earth." Parker' impassioned reverence to this estate in the late '80s brought its appeal worldwide, but neither triple digit scores nor critical acclaim need speak for the insanely low yields and meticulous winemaking that give Domaine Coche-Dury its mystique.

Approximately half of the domaine's nine hectares of vineyards are situated around its hometown of Meursault, and although Coche is best known for Chardonnay, the domaine also bottles six exquisite Pinot Noirs. Famous for the extensive oak treatment and a staggering 22 months in barrel, Coche Dury's finest wines, such as Corton Charlemagne and Meursault Perrieres, have power, concentration, purity, and depth balanced by vibrant acidity for extreme longevity.
