International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 100

($24) Saturated ruby-red. Expressive aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, black olive, pepper and Provencal herbs. Offers a suave texture along with rather cool flavors of black cherry, menthol and shoe polish. Finishes with even, slightly drying tannins.

The 2000 Gigondas Domaine Le Grand Montmirail possesses a saturated plum/purple color as well as aromas and flavors of plums, blackberries, cherries, earth, truffles, and flowers. It is a soft, succulent, low acid Gigondas to drink over the next 7-8 years.

Fantastic. Dark and deep, with lots of black fruit, this is as silky a red as you can imagine'all cream and smoothness and seduction. Full-bodied, it kicks in with a touch of fresh fruit character on the long, juicy finish. Massive, sweet tannins lurk in the background, so it should age.

This is admittedly on the backside of its life but is still very pleasing. Medium-bodied with blackberry and dried dark berry fruit. Nuances of earth, mushroom and leather. Tannins are fully absorbed leaving a smooth, soft, elegant mouthfeel. Medium length finish.

Over the hill a bit. Opened up with air. Brambly, good acidity and little tannin left. Fruit fading a bit.
