($100) Full medium ruby. Black fruits and sweet oak on the nose; shows an almost liqueur-like ripeness without going over the top. Dense, juicy and tight; a bit unyielding today. Strong torrefaction note of espresso turns to coffee grounds on the firmly tannic, youthfully tough finish. In an awkward stage today, but has the density and sweetness of fruit to reward five or six years of aging. (Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY)

Dark ruby. The 1999 is another big, powerful Brunello from this producer. It shows expressive dark fruit and scorched earth flavors with excellent persistence on the palate in a more austere, less generous style than the 2001. It should drink well for at least another decade.

Dark-colored, with intense aromas of ripe fruit, coffee and toasted oak. Full-bodied, with a depth of ripe fruit and delicious black licorice flavors and silky tannins. Beauty. This equals the quality of the excellent 1994. 1,600 cases made.

Still very fine, perhaps improving as it mellows with age. Not as powerful as the Madonna, but very elegant and enjoyable
