International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 102

(from vines just yards across the county line) Good medium ruby-red. Sappy aromas of black- and redcurrant, licorice, brown spices and shoe polish. Denser than the cabernet franc bottling, with a higher pitch despite its creamy-sweet berry flavors. Exotic oak adds another layer of flavor to this already enticing but still young cabernet. Foley loves the traditional Radoux barrels, mostly from center-of-France oak and about 20% from Vosges wood.

The dense purple-colored, angular-styled 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits aromas and flavors of licorice, toasty oak, and black currants. It possesses an austere, firm, sinewy personality as well as a tannic finish. Aging will bring out more flesh, so patience will be required in this excellent Cabernet.

Wine Spectator Author: James Laube

Well-oaked, with creamy, mocha-scented flavors leading to a ripe, supple, complex core of currant, black cherry, anise, spice and mineral. Turns sleek and elegant on the finish, with a long, lively aftertaste.

Don't let the initial waft of barnyard-funk-of-the-good kind put you off when you take an initial sniff of this wine - you probably wouldn't smell great either if you were bottled up for 12 years. As the wine is exposed to more air, the nose begins to turn sweet and floral. In the mouth, earth, flowers, fruit and spice. Tannins still alive and kicking. Although you're taken in so many different directions, it's what makes this wine interesting.

Ripe fruit, cherry, balanced by some brisk acidity. Nice finish. Enjoyable now; should drink this soon, not much aging potential from here.

Shows some anise and spice on the nose. Lovely cassis and cherries in the mouth let down by the slightly short and tannic finish. This needs to be drunk soon as it has peaked.

Garnet with brickish edge, opaque. Open nose, hint of sour cherry (marinated in bourbon), coffee, black olive and mineral notes. Firm acid and fleshed out tannins. Elegant but with a short finish. Drink now.
