International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 102

Dark ruby-red, a bit pale at the rim. Evolving aromas of currant, tobacco, cigar box, mocha and earth. Sweet, lush and rich; in a distinctly easygoing style, thanks to the very ripe merlot, which comprises 37% of the blend. Not as structured as the 2000 or 2001 but has no shortage of density or personality. Shows the classic mineral and tobacco notes of this Pauillac. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length.

The dark ruby/purple-colored Pichon Longueville Baron reveals aromas of charcoal, black currants, and sweet toasty oak. This low acid, medium-bodied, charming, lush 1999 possesses good stuffing, ripe tannin, and a moderately long finish. Enjoy it now as well as over the next 10-12 years.

Lots of new wood, with smoky, tobacco and cedar character. Medium-bodied, with plenty of berry and tobacco character and a medium, succulent finish. Very good Baron.

Consumed over 1 hours. Very satisfying. Classic aromas and flavors; but not expressive. Clean to a fault; pure and fresh. Finesse. Back-to-back - I preferred the '99 Poyferre. But this Baron is great. Not too much weight, so drink sooner than later. Has the balanced structure to cellar for a while, but don't wait too long. It's not going to get any better

Lovely, rich, elegant Bordeaux. Good intensity of fruit w/excellent balance, silky tannins, & long finish. Ready now but will hold for several years
