Full medium ruby. Explosive aromas of black raspberry, wild blackberry, truffle, smoked meat and earth; a bit syrah-like. At once powerful and aromatic in the mouth, with somewhat extractive flavors of medicinal black cherry, minerals and truffle. Denser and more powerful than the '99 Canon La Gaffeliere, but less suave and slightly tough on the back end.

Along with the 1997, the 1999 is the most forward and accessible La Mondotte yet produced. Its opaque purple color is followed by a glorious nose of candied black fruits, graphite, licorice, and underbrush. It is full-bodied and sumptuous, possessing amazing extract and richness for the vintage. Its high tannin is hidden by a wealth of glycerin, fruit, and extract. Moreover, the finish lasts for 35-45 seconds. This is an amazing achievement in 1999.

Slightly overextracted, but shows serious aromas, with lots of black licorice, violets, berries and coffee on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with an herbal, berry character, medium tannins and a fresh finish. 830 cases made.

La Mondotte is one of the wines in the vanguard of the Right Bank garagiste movement. The '99 is a fine wine but if price is at all a consideration then one must admit that they would rather drink La Mondotte out of someone else?s cellar than theirs. Deeply colored but with a rather dumb nose of slight game, cherry, and new oak. Very big in the mouth with cascading layered tannins and slightly elevated acidity. Tannins turn very sharp and angular in the wine?s finish. Impressive concentration for a '99. 75% Merlot and 25% Franc.
