International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 102

Full ruby-red color. Aromas of currant, minerals and tar. Seems a bit loose-knit on the front end for this wine, but has firm acidity. Then more impressive on the back half, with good shape and vinosity. Finishes firm and ripely tannic, with subtle persistence.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 140

The medium to full-bodied 1999 La Mission Haut Brion is beautifully complex, with notes of cherry liqueur, plums, cigar smoke, fresh tobacco, and scorched earth. This deep, elegant, yet precise wine is cut from the same mold as the 1962, 1971, 1983, and 1985. Though not a heavyweight, it is gorgeously complex, supple, and both hedonistic and intellectual.

Aromas of black licorice, mineral and berries follow through to medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Not quite as good as from barrel. 5,830 cases made.

Haut Brion tasting in Rochester, NY with J. P. Delmas. A very young and thick wine with earthy flavors balanced tannins which could age for 2 more decades with ease. The fruit is slightly reserved and hidden (but there). Very enjoyable but not outstanding.

Drinking lovely. Tastes of pencil and coal. Fruit subdued but still there. Time to drink probably at it's best now and until 2011...
