Pale golden yellow. Orange blossom, tangerine, nuts and a whiff of dried apricot on the nose. Less complex in the mouth than the Hyde bottling but densely packed and strong for this wine, with a lipsmacking sugar/acid balance. The lively acids give the soft citrus flavors terrific verve. Bright and long on the back end.

An awesome effort is the 1999 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard. There are 2,000 cases produced from this Russian River vineyard surrounding the Kistler winery. It exhibits tell-tale minerality as well as a gorgeous nose of white fruits, citrus oils, nuts, minerals, smoke, and butter. With fabulous intensity, purity, and an expansive, multi-layered mid-palate, this powerful, impeccably-balanced, restrained Chardonnay unfolds on the palate. This wine will have a long and compelling evolution.

A sleek, rich wine that despite its complex core of focused lemon-citrus, earth, tangerine and butterscotch flavors manages to remain elegant and even delicate, turning smoky on the aftertaste. 1,848 cases made.

Kistler planted this 20-acre vineyard in 1988. Early efforts were quite good but the quality really emerged starting in the mid to late nineties. Medium gold slightly cloudy with a very strong and complex bouquet of butterscotch, kiwi, vanilla, lemon liqueur, orange peel, graphite, stone, and gunflint. Full and rich on the palate with excellent length and high but well integrated acidity.
