Pleasant, stylish and easy going but it offers neither the depth nor the flavor authority of the Combottes. The body is fleshy and the flavors soft, open and forward yet overall, this is not at the same standard as the other wines in this line up.

($125) Good full red. Cassis, black cherry and oak on the nose; seems less vibrant and pure than the Clos Saint-Denis. Then quite perfumed in the mouth, with a flavor of sweet red cherry. This has the volume of a grand cru, and finishes with tannins that spread out to coat the entire palate. I'd have scored it even higher had it shown a bit more verve.

The 1999 Charmes-Chambertin displays sweet red and blackberries as well as violets in its aromas. It is lush, ripe, concentrated, and has excellent focus in its medium-bodied personality. This cherry-dominated wine also displays hints of tangy raspberries and hints of new oak. It is pure, elegant, seamless, and has a long, well-delineated finish.
