($150; like the Melbury, this is from 100% cabernet sauvignon planted in 1990) Ruby-red. Explosive, wild nose combines roasted red berries, grilled meat, tar, brown sugar, mocha and truffle. Dense but juicy, with more power and thrust than the '99 Melbury but not quite the same early appeal. Intriguing notes of smoke, herbs and truffle. Finishes with very smooth, fine tannins.

The 1999 Vecina, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon offering, exhibits aromas of graphite, tar, coffee, and creme de cassis. It is more austere and less charming and seductive than the 1999 "S".

Wonderful complexity, richness and purity of flavor, with layers of herb, currant, earth and juicy wild berry, turning to a touch of balsamic. Loads of flavor and a long, intricate aftertaste.

Made from a vineyard neighboring Harlan Estate, the '99 Vecina is one of the first efforts (along with another single sourced vineyard red called Melbury and Bond?s second wine sourced from both vineyards called Matriarch) from Bond, Bill Harlan and Bob Levy?s new project. The Vecina is very open and forward ? atypical for the '99 vintage. Moderately tannic with good sweet rather unformed fruit and mineral overtones. Harlan Estate it isn't Not a long distance runner either, drink now to 2009.
