Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 89(+?)

Bright, saturated ruby-red. Aromas of blackberry, black pepper and lead pencil. Juicy, oaky and intensely flavored; still a bit closed and dry in the middle, with rather firm acidity. Currently hiding its personality and texture. Perhaps best today on the brisk, persistent finish.

The 1999 Steading, a southern Rhone blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 20% Mourvedre. Two thousand cases were produced of this Chateauneuf du Pape look-alike from Australia's Barossa Valley. It is a terrific, deep purple-colored effort offering a sweet nose of pepper, black fruits, earth, tobacco, and cassis. Sweet on the attack (from ripe fruit, not sugar), this full-bodied, concentrated, powerful wine (14.5% alcohol) builds in the mouth to a creamy textured, blockbuster finish. While hard to resist, it will drink well for 7-8 years.

Crisp, almost bracing, with firm tannins and bright acidity supporting ripe berry and cherry flavors, which remain open and round on the finish, picking up hints of chocolate and pepper. Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. 2,000 cases made.

About This Producer

Torbreck Vintners was founded by David Powell in 1994. Although located in Australia's Barossa Valley, the name comes from a forest in Scotland where Powell previously worked as a lumberjack before becoming a winemaker. Torbreck's production is centered around the classic Barossa Valley varieties of Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro (Mourvedre), and the winemaking philosophy is based on David's love for the wines of France's Rhone Valley. Along with many intensely flavored red wines blended from old-vine Shiraz and Grenache, Torbreck also produces white wines from Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne.
