International Wine Cellar | 87-90

Deep fresh ruby-red. Brooding aromas of currant syrup, licorice, naphtha and tobacco leaf. Fairly intense flavors similar to the aromas. Still quite youthfully tight, but offers solid concentration and very good length. Just a hint of greenness on the end; the firm tannins reach the teeth.

The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a deep, saturated ruby/purple color. The wine possesses aromas of sweet toasty oak, earth, spice box, cherries, and currants. It is a soft effort for this vintage. The wine has medium body, and good fruit and flavor. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

Drink Dates:
Enjoyable and fruit forward. While it has softened it hasn't opened or gained in complexity. It is simple and drinkable and I wonder if it will ever really mature or improve with any more time in the bottle.

Had along side of the 2001 silver oak. This wine lost out, fruit had dissipated and it was slightly dull. Oak character still present but I thought it was past prime or slightly corked

Drink Dates: 2008-2010
Drinking very well; still had 30% fresh american oak flavor with the SO patten soft finish. Was working great with the filet. Still had legs for a few more years.

About This Producer


Silver Oak was founded in the early 1970s by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyer, a former winemaker with Christian Brothers. The founders' goal was to create exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon that would be distinguished by its elegance and finesse. In most years, the wines are made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from the Alexander and Napa Valleys. The developing wine is aged 30 months in American Oak barrels and then cellared about 15 months before release. Silver Oak aims to make a velvety style Cabernet that is drinkable upon release. In addition to the well-known Alexander and Napa Valley Cabernets, Silver Oak has also produced North Coast and Bonny's Vineyard Cabernets in select vintages. After 30 years of partnership between Ray and Justin, the Duncan family is currently the sole owner of the property.
