($132) Good full ruby. Jammy black fruits and pepper on ths nose; distinctly wilder than the 2000. Fat, thick and powerful, with huge fruit and impressive volume. Offers an uncanny combination of flesh and thrust. Very silky in texture but with excellent acidity and lift. The big tannins spread out to coat the entire palate. This complete Hermitage actually closed down in my glass. I'd expect it to need a good decade before approaching maturity.

Relatively pale and evolved-looking. Real lift on the nose but lighter than the 2004 overall. Great balance but a bit more austere than the 2004. Very serious and correct with nice length. Sinewy. Polished. A bit muted. Is there very, very low-level brett in this wine? It held up pretty well in the glass - very ballerina-like.

More in the style of the '01, the 1999 Hermitage is a serious effort that gives up a mineral-drenched profile of red and blackcurrants, beef blood, iron and dried flowers. More forward on the nose than the palate, with a tight, yet seamless texture that carries ample concentration and length, with bright acidity, it should continue to shine for another decade.

Rich and ripe, full-bodied, with great sweet fruit character. Lovely, thick, attractive (almost like a dessert wine), with mineral but also plum character, blackberries, fresh figs, smoke and toasty notes. It kicks in with good intensity on the finish.

Site Blog: Unidentified Appellation While the first of the flight was exceptionally tight, it was ultimately the most promising. Hauntingly proportioned notes of violet, bacon grease, melted licorice, raspberry ganache and tobacco flavors were exceptionally pretty and elegant in their presentation. The palate had a gorgeous beam of pure, mineral laced fruit that sashayed along muscular tannins to a lengthy finish. This should prove to be an immortal Syrah. I wouldn'ttouch it for another 5 years

About This Producer

The Chave family owns vines in nine of the eighteen vineyards that cover the hill of Hermitage. Chave believes that the hillside's variety of terroirs is instrumental in bringing the right balance to its blends. The domaine produces both red and white Hermitage, as well as a St Joseph Offerus. The Hermitage appellation regulations allow up to 15% white grapes to be added to the Syrah, but Chave uses a smaller amount, if any at all (his L'Hermite vineyard has some white grapevines planted alongside the red). The white Hermitage is produced from 85% Marsanne and 15% Roussanne, all of which is harvested by hand. There is also a limited production (approx. 100 cases) Cuvee Cathelin, an Hermitage cuvee named after a friend of the Chave family, artist Bernard Cathelin, who designed the label when it was first released in 1990. Finally, there is an Hermitage Vin de Paille, which is both rare and highly-regarded.

The domaine also has a second line called JL Chave Selection which produces affordable red and white Crozes-Hermitage and Hermitage, as well as a Cotes du Rhone.
