Full red-ruby. Spicy aromas of currant, cherry, licorice and fresh herbs. Varietally accurate cabernet flavors of plum, raw currant, cedar and spice, with complicating notes of herbs and dark chocolate. Finishes with firm, slightly drying tannins and good length.

Very deep crimson. Already a little bit of evolution. Very full and opulent and less obviously terroir-influenced than the older wines. Ripeness and Napa style more than anything else. Big and brutal and a touch of tea ? is this because it?s very slightly porty?! Hint of milk chocolate. Still extremely young. This should be a great wine ? but less distinctive than some other vintages. The alcohol seems especially marked.

The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, notes of graphite and black currants in an elegant, Bordeaux-styled format, medium body, outstanding purity, and an angular, dry, austere finish despite its beautiful aromatics and palate. It is less impressive than it was from barrel. It was neither fined nor filtered, yet it appears to have shut down. Whether it re-emerges is a matter of conjecture. It is one of those perplexing Cabernets with a low ninety point bouquet, but tough-textured flavors. Patience will be required.

A big step up in quality for Staglin, with tiers of dense, chewy, richly flavored currant, earth, blackberry, cherry, mineral and mocha. Finishes with a long, intense, plush aftertaste. Shows some heat and rough tannins and oak, but nothing short-term cellaring won't resolve. 2,582 cases made.

Medium to full bodied. The acidity level is low and the fruit not as full as I remember from earlier tasting. Nevertheless, it does deliver blackberry, currants and cedar after an hour of air. Drink now.

About This Producer

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.
