Bright red-ruby. Highly aromatic nose combines currant, cherry, spicecake, bitter chocolate, marzipan and a floral topnote. Lively, intensely flavored and light on its feet, with perfumed flavors of red cherry and rose petal and slightly intrusive oakiness. Grew silky as it opened in the glass. Finishes with fine but firm tannins that call for at least a few years of additional bottle aging.

The 1999, an 8,000-case blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, is a delicate, elegant, restrained, polite effort with pretty red and black currant flavors intermixed with licorice, soil overtones, and subtle spicy oak. It is neither big nor flamboyant. This is a polished, exceptionally refined offering, particularly for a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. Although somewhat understated, one has to respect its integrity and intention. It should age nicely for 10-15 years.

This winery?s new production facility is extremely impressive. One wonders whether the impressive architecture will translate into better wines. The '99 Quintessa is the finest Quintessa yet produced (I have not yet tasted the 2001). Attractive purple red color with aromas of oak, plum, slight mint, black cherry and a touch of anise. Good sweet fruit in the mouth with light well integrated oak and plush flavors. Very attractive in a restrained rather quiet manner.

About This Producer

In 2002, Valeria and Agustin Huneeus' dream of the quintessential wine estate - one vineyard that produces one singular estate wine - was realized with the opening of the winery at Quintessa.

Quintessa is truly a "winemaker's winery." The design facilitates a gravity-flow process and a state-of-the-art winery specifically tailored with fermenters and tanks sized to match the diverse blocks in the Quintessa vineyard. Additionally, the winery at Quintessa is outfitted with the latest in winemaking technology. French oak and stainless steel fermenters stand tall along the winery's front wall, providing the winemaking team with a choice of characteristics adding complexity and subtlety to the blend.

Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. The winery's goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each and every year.
