Burghound Issue: Issue 3

(50% new wood). Boudot is extremely pleased with his 99 Bâtard (he normally presents the Bâtard before the Chevalier) and with good reason. The opulent, strikingly perfumed nose explodes from the glass, in fact this is so showy that it's almost ostentatious yet nothing is out of balance. Lemon-lime aromas and a whiff of new oak lead to muscular flavors of solid breed and better definition than is typical for Bâtard or for that matter, any wine of this magnitude. For all its size and power, it remains symmetrical and solidly balanced by the ripe supporting acidity and the length is absolutely show stopping. This too is a reference standard Bâtard and while I prefer the additional complexity and detail of the Chevalier, it's a matter of preference at this level.

Musky, truffley aromas of pear blossom, herbs and menthol. Much fuller and more powerful than the Chevalier-Montrachet but less complex and less precise today. A typically dense, broad-shouldered Batard that very young but appears to have the balance for longer-term greatness.

Domaine Etienne Sauzet's 1999 Batard-Montrachet has a fabulous nose of candied white fruits, juniper berries, poached pears, and sweet, sexy spices. It is medium-to-full-bodied, broad-shouldered, and reveals great concentration in its lush, voluptuous personality. This wine is densely packed with fruits, spices, perfume, and talcum-like flavors that linger throughout its long finish.

Both powerful and subtle, medium-bodied, with lots of lemon and toasted oak, plus loads of fruit. Most impressive, it builds and builds on the palate, bursting with flavors on the very long finish. Needs time.

The nose is a incredible with light scents of tree fruits and wet rocks. It is hard to describe the flavors except to say that they are exceptionally elegant and complex. Pure, classy and infused with a delightful minerality. The finish was at least 45 seconds to a minute and was the most delightful I have ever experienced in a white wine. Never miss a chance to drink this wine.
