($141) Saturated deep red. Tight, liqueur-like nose hints at cherry pie, lead pencil and varnish. Sweet but quite backward, showing more backbone than mid-palate flesh today. Tannins are on the tough side, but there are subtle lingering cherry and mineral flavors on the aftertaste.

Earth, stones, blackberries, and cassis can be discerned in the nose of the 1999 Clos De La Roche. On the palate, this dark fruit, mineral, and spice-flavored wine is medium-bodied, firmly structured, and tightly wound. It has outstanding depth of fruit, as well as copious quantities of ripe tannins.
