International Wine Cellar | 96-98

Deep, smoky aromas of iodine, fresh herbs and roasted nuts. A wine of extraordinary solidity and richness; almost too big for the mouth. As ripe as this is (14.2% without chaptalization), it quite dry. Thick but fine and sharply delineated. The extraordinary finish goes on and on.

Like the Leflaive wine, this is made from similarly situated vines also cultivated biodynamically - since 1996 whereas Leflaive converted to biodynamism slightly later. Perhaps because it followed the Leflaive example, the impact of this wine was slightly less dramatic. Initially it was relatively reticent on the nose but it was, infuriatingly, opening up most convincingly as I had to leave. In fact of all the wines, this was the one that changed most in the glass - a good sign. There's something molten and golden about the flavour with an overlay of smoke. Very chunky, savoury and intense. This should be kept a very long time.

Incredible lenght, terrior and a beautiful polished gold sheen. Nose of spice, cotton candy, soft fabric...a real classic.

About This Producer

Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
