Cabernet Sauvignon, with 20% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet Franc.Dark blackish crimson. Extremely lush on the nose. If this is Sangiovese, it's exceptional! Then very sweet start and real lift. A sort of Lafite style. Super flattering. Real delicacy plus great ripeness. Very reverberant. Lovely fresh finish. But very little tannin at this stage. Tea leaf, just a hint of green leafiness but not unpleasant. Acidity is a factor - high altitude?

The first two bottles I tasted of the 1999 Solaia were corked, but the third was brilliant. Its black/purple color is followed by a sumptuous bouquet of licorice, blackberries, mint, and cassis, all presented in a concentrated, medium to full-bodied, dense yet elegant style. Although still young, it is undoubtedly the qualitative equivalent of a Bordeaux first or second growth.

Dark in color, with intense aromas of blackberries and fresh herbs, such as basil, with a hint of eucalyptus. Full-bodied, with extremely well-polished tannins and a long, long finish. A tight and racy young wine that needs time to come into its own. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. 7,000 cases made.

About This Producer

Although the Antinori family has been making wine for over 600 years and is steeped in tradition, they haven't been afraid to modernize production and to take an innovative approach to blending. One result is the world famous Super Tuscan "Tignanello," a blend of Sangiovese (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), and Cabernet Franc (5%). Marchesi Piero Antinori is the current proprietor of the estate, and was instrumental in creating Tignanello, propelling the popularity of Super Tuscans worldwide.

Antinori produces wines from the Italian regions of Tuscany and Umbria. In addition to Tignanello, some of Antinori's most well-known wines include Solaia, Guado al Tasso, Campo di Sasso, Badia a Passignano, Pian delle Vigne, and Chianti Classico. Antinori's various estates include 1,400 hectares of vineyards planted in Bolgheri, Montalcino, Orvieto, Montepulciano, and Chianti Classico, as well as the emerging locales Sovana and southern Maremma.
