Medium red. Mellow aromas of plum and woodsmoke. Supple and plummy in the mouth, with subtle notes of chocolate and tobacco. A fairly approachable wine already, finishing with ripe tannins and good length. This shows virtually none of the leafy character it displayed shortly after the bottling last July.

Deep crimson with rusting rim. Delia Viader pointed out that especially strict selection was needed in this difficult-to-ripen, over-criticised year. Aromatic, mineral-laden ? you can almost smell the stones that apparently had to be moved to make way for the vines. Neither too thick nor too alcoholic. Very lively, racy and dancing. Complete and neat. Very long.

This restrained 1998 (a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Cabernet Franc) recalls a Medoc claret. The wine unfolds gracefully on the palate to reveal flavors of black currants, tar, earth, creamy vanillin, and subtle oak. A medium to full-bodied, stylish, elegant red that requires some introspection, this impressive offering can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15 years.
