Saturated ruby. Liqueur-like kirsch and framboise aromas; superripe but not pruney. Very rich, deep flavors of sweet red fruits; still a bit youthfully aggressive but boasts terrific buffering volume. The strong but fine tannins reach the entire mouth. Has 2.4 grams per liter of residual sugar but does not come across as sugary, just ripe in a major way.

Pegau's 1998 Cuvee Reservee is just opening up after a period where it seemed muted and uninviting. It's a classic Pegau eclipsed only recently by the 2001, 2003, and 2007 Cuvee Reservee. Dark garnet with some pink at the rim, the wine displays the classic new saddle leather, garrigue, kirsch liqueur and blacker fruit notes, with some balsam wood, pepper and meat juices. It is full-bodied, broadly flavored, rich, with good acidity, and still some tannin to resolve. It can be drunk now as well as kept for another 10-15 years.

Superopulent. Full-bodied and thick, with rich, ripe fruit flavors that taste sweet midpalate. Wonderful, supple, velvety finish. Delicious. 6,250 cases made.

Illustrated a depth of elegance and structure that I had yet to find in Ch.d Pape. I was enticed into the glass by a vortex of deep dusty purple. This is followed by an explosive and layered bouquet of caramel, dusty/musty/cheesy funk, raspberry, boysenberry, and red currant. It is the palate though that is truly amazing- militaristic in structure. The first platoon of tannins grip the front of the tongue and cease before the mid-palate. A perfectly spherical marble of candied/stewed plums emerges to hold court on the exact center of the back palate. I counted, waiting for the finish to...finish, but at 2 minutes I just had to take another sip.

Explosive nose of ripe fruits. Dark blueberries dipped in chocolate on the attack. Great acidity and well integrated tannins that are still pretty big. I would have guessed much younger. Delicious
