International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 96

Red-ruby. Deep aromas of cassis, licorice and lead pencil. Deeper than Les Forts but currently rather mute in the middle. Strongly minerally. Offers classic Latour structure and spine. Finishes with sneaky, subtle persistence.

Minerals and savour and sappiness. Certainly nothing as simple as fruit! Although in this vintage Latour does not outshine the others as obviously as in some more recent years. Really sappy perfume. Great rich spread across the palate is impressive. Density and energy. Dry finish. Good lift. Suitably dense and very mineral. But polished too.

Wine Advocate Author: Robert Parker Issue: 134

Not a blockbuster, the 1998 possesses a dark garnet/purple color in addition to a complex bouquet of underbrush, cedar, walnuts, and licorice-tinged black currants. Although medium to full-bodied and moderately tannic, it lacks the expansiveness in the mid-palate necessary to be truly great. Moreover, the tannin is slightly aggressive, although that is hardly unusual in such a young Latour.

Wine Spectator Author: James Suckling

Plenty of currant, raspberry and mineral aromas, with hints of leaf and wet earth. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a tar, berry and cherry aftertaste. Slightly rustic for Latour. Not as exciting as I remember from barrel. 19,165 cases made.

"I'd like old world, serious, classic and Left Bank", was the request, which this wine amply fulfilled. Auction bottle, held 1.5 years. Decanted two hours, no sediment. Beautiful aromas hit all the black keys in harmony. Complex and delicious - black fruit, spice and leather. Wonderfully balanced, perfectly sized, long and gaining strength in the glass over time. A nice example of the potency of this Pauillac First Growth in a year known for Right Bank excellence. Would happily buy again. Can hold for another 5-10+ years to judge its full potential.
