Brooding aromas of hazelnut, fig, caraway seed and roasted nuts; hinted at dried fruits with aeration. Quite powerful and chewy, with flavors of soft citrus fruits. Very unevolved today; the only one of these '98 chardonnays showing its alcohol at the moment.

The rich and wonderful 1998 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard, made from a vineyard planted with the Mount Eden clone, is extremely full-bodied, with striking purity, and powerful, concentrated, honeyed flavors with nuances of butter, smoke, roasted nuts, and minerals. The creamy texture is buttressed by good acidity. Toast, gravel, and slate-like richness intermixed with fruit make this a compelling, intensely flavored Chardonnay. It should drink well for 5-7 years, perhaps longer. (release date 3/01)
