Dark red. Sappy red fruits and smoke on the nose. Cedary, minerally and uncompromisingly dry, with strong acidity giving the flavors penetration and cut. Finishes firmly tannic, with very good grip. This is always a second wine with character, rather than simply a receptacle for the fruit that doesn't make it into the grand vin

Readers looking for the taste of Haut-Brion for about one-third the price should check out the 1998 Bahans-Haut-Brion. It possesses a scorched earth, mineral, smoky, red and black currant-scented bouquet, terrific complexity, purity and elegance, and a harmonious palate. Tannin in the finish suggests 1-2 years of cellaring may be required, but this is a serious effort that should age well for 15+ years.

Subtle aromas of raspberry, vanilla and mineral. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit, ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Amazing for a second wine. 10,000 cases made.

Magnum: Classic Bahans and suites my palate quite well. An elegant wine with medium body, tobacco and some spice with very nice balance ans smooth tannins. I've been somewhat skeptical of the theory that larger bottle formats yield a better tasting wine, but this appears to be the case for this wine, as the magnum was slightly better than the 750ml. This wine will evolve slightly and is very enjoyable now.

Plenty of concentration, but flavors are simple and somewhat one-dimensional. Tart cherry and a hint of pipe tobacco. Doesn't taste completely ripe to me. Medium-full weight on the palate. Little to no acidity, but smooth, fine tannins on the finish. Based on the current strengths of the acidity and tannin, it doesn't seem like this wine will improve with more cellar time, but will stay the same. Drink up.
