Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 91

Good medium ruby. Aromas of roasted blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice, tar and roast coffee. Less expressive than the '99 or '00 but very concentrated for the vintage, although with a bit less stuffing one is aware of a faint edge of acidity. Narrows a bit toward the end, but lingers impressively.

The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a fine wine. While it does not reveal much weight, it is a dense plum/purple-colored, big, thick, concentrated effort. Evolved aromas of smoke, cedar, tapenade, blackberries, creme de cassis, and creosote are followed by a lush, full-bodied, voluptuously-textured 1998 exhibiting superb intensity as well as low acid, sweet, pure flavors. This is a dazzling example of extremely ripe Cabernet Sauvignon made under less than ideal conditions. It will drink well upon its release, and over the following two decades.

Very pretty and floral, with lots of crushed red fruits on the nose. Hints of currant bush. Full-bodied and round, with silky tannins and a long, juicy and fruity finish. Lovely wine. Almost perfect to drink now.

About This Producer

Located high above Lake Hennessy, the vineyards which supply this outstanding expression of Napa's bounty are some of the few influenced by the moderating influence of a relatively large body of water. At 1,500-feet, the high altitude of the Pritchard Hill area also serves to produce low yields of premium grapes that provide the dense, concentrated, black fruit aspect of this enormously complex 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded in 1987 by Don and Barbara Bryant, the wines were originally made by Helen Turley. The current winemaker is Helen Keplinger with Michelle Edwards consulting.
