International Wine Cellar Author: Stephen Tanzer Issue: Issue 96

Medium ruby. Nuanced nose combines plum, woodsmoke, earth and sweet oak scents. Supple and nicely concentrated, with flavors of plum, herbs and oak. Not especially vibrant but shows good texture and intensity. Finishes with slightly peppery tannins, a hint of unabsorbed acidity and a note of licorice. I'd give this wine another 12 to 18 months to knit.

The 1998 Proprietary Red is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit-Verdot, and 1% Malbec. A sexy, up-front, plush wine with a deep purple color, medium to full body, and copious quantities of sweet blackberry, creme de cassis, and meaty notes, it is on a fast evolutionary track, and thus should be consumed over the next 10-12 years.

Deftly balanced, rich and elegant, with creamy currant, mocha, herb, blackberry and anise flavors, keeping a tight, supple focus and lingering on the finish. 2,500 cases made.

In the tough '98 vintage, Pahlmeyer declassified 30% of the production from his proprietary red. Made of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec, this medium blood red hued wine has lots of thin legs displaying light coloration. Raised in new French oak for 18 months, the wine displays attractive though simple warm aromas of chocolate, toast, dust, and plum. Lacks the pizzazz of most Pahlmeyer wines. Moderate velvety tannins and slight high acidity give the wine good structure but there just isn'tenough fruit on its bones for it to be considered great.
