Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | 88

Good deep medium ruby. Plum, minerals, smoke and roasted tomato on the nose. Lush, sweet and plump, with a suave texture and a slight tarry nuance. Could use a bit more verve and complexity. Finishes with dusty tannins. On the light side for this bottling, but avoids dryness.

The 1998 Merlot is light, but it is undoubtedly one of the finest Merlots produced in this irregular vintage. A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc (1,750 cases), Jayson Pahlmeyer and winemaker Erin Green decided to eliminate 38% of the wine. Full-bodied, thick, and juicy, with low acidity as well as melted chocolate, cherry, smoke, and toast aromas and flavors, it is best drunk over the next 5-8 years.

Firm, with rich coffee- and leather-scented black cherry, currant, mineral, anise and sage notes that gain tannic weight on the finish. A little rough around the edges now, but give it a year or so. 1,600 cases made.

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.
