Good medium ruby. Aristocratic, highly complex nose hints at plum, roast coffee, leather, grilled nuts, tobacco and earth. A bit reticent today but already offers an uncanny amalgamation of density and vinosity. A very suave, subtle wine that finishes with creamy, sweet tannins and terrific grip and length. Was there a more consistently outstanding first growth through the decade of the '90s?

Deep crimson still. Although there is trademark Haut Brion underneath there is already beguiling tertiary perfume on top. There’s a richness underneath. Warm and spicy and very charming. Acidity is noticeable. A lovely bouquet already. Dry finish – quite a bit of tannin still – one will hope that the fruit outlives the tannin… the first wine where I have wondered about this. The nose seems to be galloping ahead of the tannins, but on past performance it should be fine.

As reported over the last two years, this is a prodigious Haut-Brion. It exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a tight, but incredibly promising nose of smoke, earth, minerals, lead pencil, black currants, cherries, and spice. This full-bodied wine unfolds slowly, but convincingly on the palate, revealing a rich, multi-tiered, stunningly pure, symmetrical style with wonderful sweetness, ripe tannin, and a finish that lasts for nearly 45 seconds. It tastes like liquid nobility.

Rich and wonderful wine, classic, with loads of vanilla, raspberry and chocolate aromas. Full-bodied, with fine tannins and a long aftertaste of berry, grape and vanilla. Subtle, elegant and powerful, with great length. 12,000 cases made.

About This Producer

Since its founding in 1525, Chateau Haut-Brion has passed between many illustrious owners, including admirals, archbishops, and mayors of Bordeaux. In recent years, the estate has come under the ownership of Clarence Douglas Dillon, Ambassador of the United States in Paris and Minister of Finance under President John F. Kennedy, making it the only American-owned First Growth property. Currently, Dillon's granddaughter, the Duchesse de Mouchy, oversees Haut-Brion, among many others, under the public limited company of "Domaine Clarence Dillon."

Chateau Haut-Brion is also the only First Growth property from the 1855 Classification that lies outside of the Medoc and Sauternes. Located in Pessac, within the Graves region, just one mile from the city of Bordeaux, the wine of Chateau Haut-Brion is highly sought-after, landing it among the most expensive and prestigious wines in France. The estate vineyards, dominated by gravel and clay, are planted to both red and white varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Haut-Brion is characterized by earthy scents, ripe fruit, tobacco and mineral, revealing aromas of chocolate and smoke and creating an elegant and harmonious wine that is highly structured, allowing it to age seamlessly.
