Medium red. Complex aromas of currant, tobacco and smoke. Dry-edged in the manner of the vintage, but vinous and precise, with subdued sweetness and solid structure. Finishes with firm but rather sweet tannins and very good length. A classic, elegant style of Smith Haut Lafitte.

Notably deep colour. Lovely nose – full and opulent. Burnt edge but very savoury and appetising. Very dramatic. A bit dry finish. Gouleyant.

A beautiful wine of symmetry, finesse, and elegance, this deep ruby/purple-colored offering reveals classic aromas of black currants, new wood, and scorched earth. This pure, medium-bodied, restrained, measured, graceful 1998 offers impressive overall symmetry as well as well-integrated tannin.

This young Bordeaux shows intense aromas of wet earth, stone and berries. It's full-bodied, with super well-integrated tannins and a long, long finish. Very well made indeed, and much better than when tasted from barrel. 9,165 cases made.

About This Producer

Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte is located in the Pessac-Leognan appellation and is classified as a Graves Classified Growth. The chateau produces about 16,000 cases per year, which includes both their red and white versions and their second label, Les Hauts de Smith. The average 30-year-old vines represent red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc; and whites Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Semillon. The vineyards are situated on gravel, which gives its vines two great advantages: superb natural drainage, and pebbles that reflect the sun's rays, helping to ripen the fruit. The red wine is concentrated and powerful, with a bouquet of ripe red berry fruit. It may also have overtones of licorice, violet, and flint. The white wine is characterized by citrus, apple, peach and brioche with strong acidity. It is very long and clean on the palate.
