(Saturated, bright ruby-red. Great nose offers a full range of aromas) cassis, raspberry, bitter chocolate, licorice, Asian spices. Dense, lush and sweet; a superripe Ornellaia that almost miraculously remains elegant. The raspberry and chocolate character follows through in the mouth. Finishes very fresh, with big, broad, chocolatey tannins and a late note of leather. Turned a bit more tannic with aeration, but this is still a rather feminine style of Ornellaia. This vintage offered perfect conditions, noted Duroux: a hot August, and dry conditions in August and September.

Blackish crimson. Very attractive savoury note ? interesting! Sweet start, slightly inky but with real refreshment value and properly integrated cf 1997. The mineral element of the property shines through. 14.5% CS:M:CF 60:35:5 163,000 bottles

Made in a relatively structured style for the normally succulent Ornellaia, the dense saturated ruby/purple-colored 1998 offers up aromas of pain grille, spice, smoke, black fruits, and graphite. Full-bodied, concentrated, exceptionally pure, and long, it will be at its finest between 2005-2018. Very impressive, but it requires patience.

A cool and sleek Tuscan red, with tarragon and fresh sage aromas, blackberry and cherry undertones. Full-bodied, with a wonderfully silky palate of fine tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very sophisticated and reserved. 13,330 cases made.

Deep garnet colour; very dark in the core. No sign of bricking at the rim yet. Powerful fruity nose with redcurrant, cassis and blackcurrant; all underpinned with cedar and a hint of green pepper. Medium bodied, good acidity and mouth-cleansing tannins. Real complexity on the palate; cedar, blackcurrant, stewed fruits and an earthiness which evolved into more spicy winter fruit and dark chocolate over the life of the bottle. Superb length in the mid palate and in the powerful rich finish. I think this has years left too. Wow. Amazing.

Dark garnet in color with very slight bricking--interesting color. Rich aroma of dried fruit and spice, which carries over into the flavor. Rich wine still retaining some fruit, but with a good structure and soft tannins. Excellent

About This Producer

A premiere estate located in Tuscany's Bolgheri coast, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia produces the renowned Merlot-based blends Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove, and Le Volte. The unique microclimate and combination of clay in the soil eventually proved ideal, epitomized by the 2001 Masseto, which garnered 100 points from the Wine Spectator. The pinnacle achievement at Ornellaia, the Masseto has developed a cult following for its limited allocation.

Ornellaia, a Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend which debuted in 1985, is the estate's signature wine. Le Serre Nuove, which requires less aging and displays a more fruit forward style, is something of a "second wine" and joins Le Volte, a Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot blend, as wines at a younger age.
