A lovely nose that is still fairly primary and possesses none of the slightly herbaceous undercurrent of many '97s with slight spice notes to the red and violet-infused nose that continues onto the middle weight and classy flavors that are both supple and refined with a shorter finish than one might otherwise expect. This bottle displays noticeable gas and I would suggest decanting it for 20 to 30 minutes first. In sum, lovely if not exceptional and a wine that will continue to age.

Good deep bright red. Very spicy but rather shy aromas of blackberry, raspberry, currant, licorice, mace and nutmeg. Penetrating and spicy in the mouth; cool black fruit flavors are downright refreshing for the vintage. Then opens beautifully on the back half, showing a silky texture, captivating sappy sweetness, and superb persistence. This is the best value among the Comte Georges de Vogüé '97s, and a knockout for the vintage.

Pale colour with a brick rim. Earthy somewhat funky leather and game nose with aromas of tobacco leaf, cinnamon, tree bark and pepper. The palate is mature with soft, powdery tannins and crisp acidity plus a good amount of fruit remaining. Long finish with a slight grip of astringency.
